WTF Is Folate - And Why Is Your Growing Baby Obsessed With It?

Folate aka folic acid might get name-dropped more than an ex at a dinner party but what actually is it and why is it so important throughout all trimesters?

Folate is a naturally occurring form of vitamin B9 and Folic acid is the lab-made version. It plays a major role in making DNA, repairing cells, and supporting rapid growth - aka all the stuff your body and baby are doing on overdrive during pregnancy. It’s like the quiet MVP behind the scenes, keeping things running smoothly.

Trimester Zero: Before You Even Pee on the Stick

Yes, there’s a Trimester Zero. It’s that magical time before conception when you’re still thinking about maybe trying to conceive - or not thinking about it at all yet. Either way, folate is already a big deal.

And here’s why: The neural tube (which becomes your baby’s brain and spinal cord) forms within the first 28 days of pregnancy - often before you even realise you’re pregnant. That means, folate needs to be in your system before you miss your period, not just after.

Start supplementing before you start trying - or as early as possible because folate helps reduce the risk of any birth defects.

First Trimester: The Critical Window

This is the phase where folate earns its gold star reputation.  From supporting rapid cell division and growth, forming your baby's brain, heart, and spinal cord along with reducing the risk of neural tube defect - yep, it's kind of a big deal.

How much? The standard recommendation is 400 mcg of folate per day, but depending on your individual needs and if you are like the 60% of us that carry the MTHFR gene mutation you often need a slightly higher dosage - or a more bioavailable form such as methylated folate (we have both).

Second Trimester: Growth Spurt Season

Folate is crucial here too for placental growth, supporting your baby's growing brain and organs alongside keeping your red blood cell production on track (your energy).  Keep your daily dose going strong and consistent and try adding in leafy greens, lentils, and avocados in the rotation for a little extra boost.

Third Trimester: Finishing Strong

You're on the home stretch and folate is continuing to help with baby's brain development, supports mom to be with a little more balance in energy and mood (we know that might not feel like it at 38 weeks).  And a little sidetone: we also recommend continuing your prenatal into the fourth trimester, especially if you're breastfeeding.
