Read time: 3 minutes

So, you’ve decided to ditch the pill or stop other birth control methods – awesome! Whether you’re planning to start a family soon or just want to let your body do its natural thing, it’s important to know what to expect and how to best support your body post-pill and make the transition as smooth as possible.

*Spoiler Alert* it can be a hormonal rollercoaster

Once you stop taking birth control, your body needs time to readjust. Hormones might be all over the place for a little bit and it’s completely normal for your cycle to be irregular for a few months as your body gets back on track.  You may find that you breakout as hormonal changes can sometimes lead to acne and you may feel a little more emotional than usual - hang in there with the mood swings!

You may experience the return of some natural symptoms

Some of those pre-pill symptoms might come back such as PMS.  Expect potential premenstrual syndrome symptoms like cramps, bloating, and moodiness. You might also notice signs of ovulation like cervical mucus changes and mild pelvic pain.

There can be a fertility rebound

The good news is that your fertility can return quickly after stopping birth control. Some people conceive right away, while others might take a few months.

Nourish with Nutrients

Seems pretty obvious we know but load up on fruits, veggies, whole grains, and lean proteins. Your body needs all the good stuff to balance hormones and support overall health.

  • Folic Acid: Found in leafy greens, beans, and citrus fruits. It’s essential for reproductive health.

  • Vitamin B6: Helps with mood regulation. Find it in bananas, potatoes, and chickpeas.

  • Magnesium: Reduces PMS symptoms. Load up on nuts, seeds, and dark leafy greens.

Hydrate, hydrate, hydrate

Staying hydrated helps flush out toxins and keeps everything functioning smoothly. Aim for at least 8 glasses a day.

Try to manage stress

Practice Relaxation Techniques: Stress can wreak havoc on your hormones. Try mindfulness, meditation, or even a cozy evening with a good book.

Catch some more Zzzzzs

Aim for 7-9 hours of restful sleep each night. Your body repairs and balances hormones while you snooze.

Track Your Cycle

Use a journal or an app to keep track of your symptoms and cycle. This can help you understand your body better and identify any patterns.

Choose more natural products

Try to make more mindful choices when it comes to beauty and household products. Opt for natural skincare and cleaning products to reduce your toxin exposure.

Seek help if things seem a little off

While it’s normal for your body to take some time to adjust, if you’re experiencing severe symptoms or if your periods haven’t returned after a few months, it might be a good idea to chat with a healthcare professional. They can offer personalized advice and ensure everything’s on track.

Transitioning off birth control is a journey, and everybody is different. Be patient with yourself and give your body the time and support it needs to rebalance. By nourishing your body, staying active, and managing stress, you can make this transition smoother and set yourself up for better reproductive health.
